VOIDASYLUM by Mario Miquelito

Design Apprentice

Mario Miquelito

joined SoHarlem in 2020 to study garment construction and work with our senior Artisans-in-Residence on his development as a designer. Mario is a SoHarlem Design Apprentice, with our Studio continuing to serve as his critical home base for creating and producing garments.

Mario grew up in a family of artists in Seattle and first started sketching clothing when he was ten years old. After attending the Fashion Institute of Technology where he studied couture and evening wear, Mario embarked upon a successful career in the fashion industry developing everything from womenswear to streetwear. During the pandemic, Mario participated in Parsons School of Design’s Streetwear Essentials program, which is where he learned about SoHarlem.

In 2018, Mario founded VOID ASYLUM to design and produce garments that he describes as Streetwearable Art. As creative director, he conceptualizes high-end streetwear based on digital and hand-designed graphics. Mario’s experience and skills are reflected in his first line which competed in and won Harlem Fashion Week’s 2021 Emerging Designers Competition. According to Mario, based on his experience at SoHarlem, “It’s important to draw wisdom from many places, otherwise it can become rigid and stale.”

Mario has won a number of fashion competitions since joining SoHarlem and has moved on to new fashion opportunities that further promote his line.
